2018 Dream Big Bracket Entries
Boys and Girls Club
One program that Boys and Girls Club is working to add in their new addition is a theatre program. It is our goal to be able to present a play to the families and other Club members this year. In order to do so we will need to provide props for the play. With your assistance we would be able to purchase some of the props that will be used for the first play and any future plays where we can reuse the props. Recently the Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbia added an expansion of 14,000 square feet to our existing 10,000 square foot building located at 1200 N 7th Street. We were able to add a high school sized gym with a stage for our Club kids to utilize. With this expansion we have been able to introduce several new programs to the kids.
Cedar Ridge Elementary
Makerspace activities, both high and low tech, help develop the collaboration and communication skills of students. With these funds, we will be able to purchase materials to support ongoing Maker activities in classrooms and for periodic challenges put on by the media center. Examples of Maker activities are:
- Programming robots to solve problems
- Building structures with upcycled materials
- Using Legos to tell stories
- Weaving and sewing
- Coding using a variety of programming languages
Cedar Ridge is moving to a new building and we are welcoming students from New Haven and Shepard elementary schools to our existing Cedar Ridge family. We believe this idea will build community among our new student family, boost new school spirit and make sure we are being inclusive of all students coming to our building next year.
The Dream Big grant will help Cedar Ridge support a wide variety of learners coming together from different schools. Through successes and failures, our students will build relationships with their peers through these real-world problem solving experiences.
Columbia Golf Foundation
The Columbia Golf Foundation is seeking $500 to help launch their new program, Rising Stars. This is a program for beginning and intermediate golfers that will have local high school girls golfers serve as mentors for younger girls. The program is designed to give youth playing opportunities in a fun learning environment with peer role models. The Columbia Golf Foundation provides access to the game of golf and its values for youth of all background and skill levels.
Columbia Supreme
The new 6th grade youth basketball program is starting out and this money will help towards any/all of the following needs listed for the team. New uniforms are needed to support our new team name, Columbia Supreme Elite. We need new basketballs for practice and equipment, practice jersey’s, funds for tournament fees, funds to pay for gym time/practices, funds to pay for strengthening clinics and first aid kits.
Heart of Missouri Girls on the Run
Heart of Missouri Girls on the Run is seeking $500 to fund 4 full scholarships for our fall 2018 season. We believe all girls, no matter their family’s economic status, should have the opportunity to participate in Girls on the Run. This is why we offer unlimited scholarships to ensure every girl is able to participate regardless of their ability to pay the $125 program fee. Our program history tells us that many of the girls who participate in our program wouldn’t be able to do so without scholarship support. During the fall 2017 season, scholarships led 125 girls – 43% of the total girls served that season –to participating in our life-changing and enriching program.
Lange Middle School
Lange Middle School would like to use the $500 dollars to help start and fund a tennis unit at their school.
Roots N Blues Foundation
We would use the money to fund our Blues in the Schools assembly program. We can bring in a professional Blues musician to do two all-school assemblies with the $500.
School of Missouri Contemporary Ballet
In the current school year, the School of Missouri Contemporary Ballet has partnered with West Middle School to start an after school Ballet Club. Members of the ballet club study free of charge with professional Missouri Contemporary Ballet dancers twice a week. As of now the dancers at West do not have ballet barres, and have been using a borrowed dance floor. We would like to be able to purchase ballet barres, marley floor and uniforms for West Middle School so that our students there will have access to the proper equipment at all times.
